Hydrovortex Hydrocyclones
Hydrocyclones are equipment mainly intended for the separation of solid-liquid suspensions, and are used industrially in almost all sectors.
AMP® offers a wide range of models and sizes of hydrocyclones. They are manufactured in two types of execution: polyurethane or polymers (integral design) or steel-elastomer construction with metal casing and inner lining in different types of elastomers depending on the application. Hydrocyclones are also supplied in special materials resistant to corrosion and high temperatures for very specific processes.
Its modular construction system, in conical or cylindrical geometry, allows the exchange of parts between hydrocyclones of different types and construction materials, and thus the selection of the right hydrocyclone model for a specific application.

Applications
Hydrovortex Hydrocyclones are used in the most diverse applications:
Sand washing, removing harmful particles smaller than 50-150 microns.
Recovery of fine sands, lost in the overflow of inefficient or obsolete washing equipment.
Production of two-sand and ultra-fine sands.
Classification of solids, in the range of 10-300 microns, as in grinding and pre-concentration circuits of minerals.
Slurry thickening, prior to concentration stages.
Partial clarification of effluents.
Counter-current washing circuits.
Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) of thermal power plants.

Functioning
The main function of the Hydrovortex Hydrocyclone is to separate the solids suspended in a given flow from the “feed” pulp into two fractions, one accompanying the flow called ‘discharge’ which carries in suspension the solids coarser than a given cut-off size and another fraction accompanying the flow called “overflow” which carries in suspension the solids finer than the above mentioned size.
The coarser particles rotate close to the wall due to the effect of centrifugal acceleration, being evacuated through the nozzle in the form of a thick pulp. Due to the small size of the nozzle, only a part of the suspension is discharged, creating a “secondary vortex” with an upward trajectory at the lower vertex, which is where the separation takes place as the highest tangential accelerations are generated at this point. This current drags the fine particles towards the overflow together with most of the liquid, which is discharged through a central tube located in the upper cylindrical body of the hydrocyclone. To adjust the separation size of the solid particles between 10 and 500 microns, the vortex acceleration is regulated and the geometry and/or nozzles of the hydrocyclone are modified.
Second plane hydrocyclones
Cylindrical hydrocyclones with central discharge, called Flat Bottom Hydrocyclones or by their acronym CBC (Circulating Bed Classifier) have specific characteristics that differentiate them from conventional conical hydrocyclones due to their capacity to reach coarser cut-off sizes, in addition to presenting a more stable operation under variations in feed conditions, especially in the concentration of solids. In CBC hydrocyclones, a third stream is created that generates a fluid bed of solid particles at the bottom, which are kept in motion from the periphery of the hydrocyclone towards the central discharge orifice. This stream is essential to avoid blockage of the coarse discharge with high solids concentration values. Its main application is in the production of sands with special granulometries.
